About the Magazine

Current Accounts is the magazine of Bank Street Writers, Bolton, UK (see the link below).

We publish two issues a year, featuring work by members of Bank Street Writers and also by outside contributors from all over the world.

We have published work by new and established writers, including Gerald England, M.R. Peacocke, Pat Winslow, Geoff Stevens, and many others.

There are usually 48 pages per issue.

From the latest issue (No. 13):

Sheila Clift

THE BRINGING HOME

She stood sleeves rolled
pulling back the canes, risking nettle stings.
In one hand a white bowl filling slowly,
stained with dark juice from the bruised fruit.

The currants hung plumply in clusters
like grapes beneath the leaves, each batch glistening.
She threaded red fingers between the stems
to gather handfuls.

Behind her a starling in the apple tree preened
and waited for the gleanings.
Across the lane bees stitched the hedgerows
in a murmuring warp and weft.

Deftly her hands worked the bushes.
When she stood inside a pool of shadow the bowl was full.
Cupped within the porcelain rim
the berries settled.

Framed by the open window he watched,
loving each movement of the harvester,
trusting his dreams to the gathering hands,
waiting for the bringing home.
